Mouse double click test
Click normally, one click at a time. Second presses that come faster than a finger can move are switch chatter.
Isolation: —
Click here 100 times, one ordinary click at a time.
Per button: presses, last hold, shortest release-to-press gap. Corner mark: the button has reported at least once. Solid: held now.

If a mouse clicks twice when pressed once, its micro-switch is chattering. This test marks a second press that comes faster than a finger can click: press to press under 60 ms, or release to press under 30 ms. Click 100 times normally; three or more bounces mean the switch is faulty.
How to read the readings
| Reading | Pass | Marginal | Fault |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounces in 100 clicks | 0 | 1–2 | 3 or more |
| Suspect presses | up to 40 ms above the threshold | shown, not counted | — |
| Hold test (5 s) | no break | — | any release inside the hold |
The threshold can be moved from 20 to 150 ms; 60 ms is the default because deliberate clicks are rarely closer than 80–100 ms.
What a browser cannot measure
- The test sees what the operating system delivers. Firmware debounce inside the mouse can hide chatter, and some drivers add their own.
- The OS double-click speed is shown for reference only; it is not used to detect chatter.
Fixing the fault
Windows
- Turn off ClickLock: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings.
- Raise the debounce time in the maker’s software if available.
- Blow compressed air around the button; if bounces persist, replace the switch.
macOS
- Check Accessibility → Pointer Control for Mouse Keys and alternate actions.
- Raise debounce in the maker’s software, then clean or replace the switch.
Linux
- libinput has a debounce filter; check
libinput debug-eventsfor duplicate button events. - Clean or replace the switch.
Questions
Why does my mouse double click?
The micro-switch under the button wears out and bounces: one press produces two contacts a few milliseconds apart. The OS sees two clicks.
How many bounces mean the mouse is broken?
In 100 normal clicks, zero is healthy, one or two means repeat the test, three or more means the switch is faulty.
Can software fix it?
Some mice let you raise the debounce time. It hides chatter but adds delay; replacing the switch fixes it.
Method and algorithm version
Algorithm version 1 (2026-10). Presses come from changes of the buttons bitmask across all mouse and pointer events, so chorded buttons are not lost. Chatter is a press with press-to-press below the threshold or release-to-press below half of it. dblclick events are counted separately and never used.
